Africa desk
A vessel trading around Africa can call a dozen ports in a dozen countries, each with its own tariff, currency, language, documentary habit and working week. Owners, managers and charterers who do not want to manage a dozen agents appoint Maingate Shipping to coordinate the whole itinerary from Mombasa: our own desk at Kenyan ports, and sub-agency partners at every other port working under our instruction, our DA format and our reporting.
This is the hub of the Africa agency line. Every port in the cluster has its own desk with the port's facts and the services a call needs; every country has a coordination desk; every region has a regional desk. This desk explains how the line works as a whole.
The principal sends one instruction with the itinerary. The desk confirms the partner at each port, issues a proforma DA per port in one format, funds the partners, tracks each call through pre-arrival, daily and departure reports, and closes each port with a final DA and receipts. The master has one number to call at any hour, and so does the principal.
One account across the itinerary, one reporting style, statements of facts prepared to one standard so that laytime can be calculated consistently, crew changes planned across the voyage rather than port by port, and a desk that already knows the vessel when she calls the next port.
Partners are appointed under written sub-agency agreements with agreed reporting, DA standards and settlement terms. Performance is reviewed after each call and annually. Where a port has no partner yet, the desk appoints and instructs one for the call and reports to the principal in the same way.
The same desk handles crew management and Kenyan seafarer supply, chartering and sale and purchase, and post-fixture laytime work, so that a principal trading Africa can bring the whole voyage to one office.
This desk is part of Maingate Shipping Limited, the Mombasa ship agency, crewing and brokerage house that has attended vessels at Kenyan ports since 2020 from its office at Express Building, Moi Avenue. Port agency at Mombasa and Lamu is handled by the company's own boarding officers; calls elsewhere in Africa run through the Maingate agency line under one DA format and one reporting style; Kenyan seafarers are recruited and managed from the same office; and the chartering desk fixes the tonnage that brings East Africa its wheat, fertilizer, clinker and fuel.
Principals deal with one desk for the whole voyage, and every service is agreed in writing before it is performed.
At Kenyan ports, yes. Elsewhere the local partner is the agent of record with the port, appointed and instructed by Maingate on the principal's behalf, and Maingate is responsible to the principal for the service.
