CoordinationMaingate Shipping, Mombasa

Ship agency in Ghana from Maingate Shipping means one instruction for every Ghanaian port, one proforma DA format, one reporting style and one desk that knows the vessel from her last call. The cargoes are cocoa, cashew, manganese, bauxite and timber outbound; wheat, clinker, fuel, vehicles and containers inbound; the hinterland is wider than the country, since Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger through Tema.

Authorities: the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority operates both ports. Formalities are filed by the desk at each port.

The operational fact the desk tells every principal at nomination: cocoa export timing, refinery tanker calls and offshore crew rotations run on separate calendars that the agent balances.

The ports of Ghana

Each port has its own desk with the terminals, the cargo and the services a call needs.

  • One account, one reconciliation

The ports of Ghana, one instruction

Ghana's ports are Tema, Takoradi. Tema handles containers, wheat, clinker, fuel and vehicles inbound, with cocoa, cashew and aluminium products outbound through the deep-water container terminal, the general cargo and bulk berths, the oil refinery jetty and the fishing harbour. Takoradi handles manganese, bauxite, cocoa and timber outbound, with clinker, fuel and offshore supplies inbound through the bulk berths for manganese and bauxite, the container and general cargo berths, the oil jetty and the offshore supply base.

Calls at each port are attended by our partner agent there under Maingate's instruction, with the Mombasa desk issuing the proforma DA, tracking the call and closing the account.

Beyond the quay: Ghana's hinterland

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger through Tema. Corridor cargo means transit bonds, delivery orders, rail or road evacuation and receivers who are far from the quay. The desk coordinates the clearing agents and the transport so that discharge is not held by paperwork and the cargo's documents follow it inland.

Where a cargo is split between Ghanaian ports or between Ghana and a neighbouring country, the sequence is planned as one voyage with one file.

Authorities and formalities

Every Ghanaian call touches the same authorities: the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority operates both ports. Filing ahead, in the format each expects, is what keeps a vessel from waiting at anchor for a stamp.

Reports to the principal follow one style at every port: pre-arrival, daily, departure with the statement of facts, then the final DA.

Husbandry across Ghana

Husbandry in Ghana is planned port by port: cocoa export timing, refinery tanker calls and offshore crew rotations run on separate calendars that the agent balances. The desk chooses the port for the crew change, the stem and the spares with the itinerary in view and tells the principal at nomination.

Protecting agency for owners runs alongside the charterer's agent where the charter party gives the charterer the appointment.

Ghana: what principals ask first

Which Ghanaian port should my cargo use?

The desk advises from the cargo, the receiver's location and the port's current draft and berth position; the port desks in this cluster set out the facts for each.

Who is on the ground at the Ghanaian ports?

Our partner agent at each port, appointed and instructed by Maingate Shipping; the Mombasa desk coordinates and is responsible to the principal.

How are transit cargoes for neighbouring countries handled through Ghana?

Transit bonds, delivery orders and evacuation are coordinated with the receiver's clearing agent so that discharge is not held and the documents follow the cargo inland.

Can Maingate arrange bunkers and crew in Ghana?

Yes, at the ports where each is available; the port desks state the position for crew changes and bunkers.

What does a Ghana appointment cost?

An agency fee per call agreed in the proforma DA, with port and third-party charges at cost and receipts attached.

A Port Call Is a Hundred Small Decisions. Make Them With One Desk.

One instruction, one account, one contact for the master and one for the principal.
