Ship Agency in Francophone Africa: Nominate in English, Attended in French, Reported in English

Ship Agency in Francophone Africa: Nominate in English, Attended in French, Reported in English

Half the commercial ports of Africa work in French: the customs form, the pilot's radio call, the stevedore foreman's shift report and the port authority's tariff all come in French, and a principal in Singapore, Athens or Dubai who nominates an agent there is dealing with a language as well as a port. Maingate Shipping coordinates calls at Abidjan, Dakar, Douala, Lomé, Cotonou, Conakry, Pointe-Noire, Casablanca and the other francophone ports from its desk in Mombasa: the principal instructs in English, the partner agent at the port works in French, and the reports come back in English.

For francophone principals the same ports have desks written in French, listed below; this desk is the English door to the same service.

What the regional desk coordinates

  • Instructions and reports in English
  • Local formalities filed in French
  • Translation of documents the principal must see
  • Proforma DA in one format across currencies
  • Partner agents under Maingate's instruction
  • West African, North African and Indian Ocean francophone ports
  • French desks for francophone principals
  • Crew changes planned for the itinerary
  • Bunker calls at Lomé, Dakar and Tanger Med
  • One contact for the master and one for the principal

How the language is handled

The nomination, the proforma DA, the daily reports, the statement of facts and the final account are in English. The partner agent at the port files the local documents in French, speaks French to the authorities and the stevedores, and translates what the principal needs to see. Where a document must be produced in French for the port or the receiver, the desk arranges it and tells the principal what it says.

Why nominate through Mombasa

One DA format, one reporting style and one contact across ports whose tariffs, currencies and working weeks all differ, with a desk that reads the French file so the principal does not have to. For a vessel trading between the francophone coast and East Africa, the same desk attends Mombasa itself.

The company behind this desk

Maingate Shipping Limited is a ship agency, crew management and ship brokerage company based at Express Building on Moi Avenue in Mombasa, Kenya, serving vessels at Kenyan ports since 2020 and coordinating port calls across Africa through its agency line. The company attends bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, car carriers, cruise ships, fishing, offshore and naval vessels at Mombasa and Lamu, places Kenyan seafarers with owners worldwide, and fixes dry bulk, tanker and project tonnage for East African cargoes.

One instruction to the desk covers the port call, the crew, the fuel and the account, and the same office answers the master and the principal at any hour.

Questions we are asked about this

Does the master need to speak French at these ports?

No. The partner agent handles the port and the authorities in French and briefs the master in English.

Can a French-speaking principal use the same desk?

Yes. The French desks for Abidjan, Dakar, Douala, Lomé, Cotonou, Conakry, Pointe-Noire and Casablanca describe the same service in French, and the desk reports in the language agreed at nomination.

Are the French desks separate from the English ones?

They are twins: each French desk links to its English port desk and carries a language tag for search engines, so a principal lands on the version in their language.

The Vessel Does Not Care Who the Agent Is. The Account Does.

Receipts behind every line, a record behind every stoppage, a desk behind every call.
