Breakbulk calls
Steel coils, plates, billets, rebar, pipes, timber, bagged commodities and mixed breakbulk arrive at Mombasa on general cargo and multipurpose vessels, and their discharge is a matter of lifting gear, tally and care. Maingate Shipping attends these vessels at the general cargo berths for owners, charterers and receivers.

Breakbulk is where cargo damage claims are born, at the hook and in the stack. The desk plans the discharge so that the right gear is used, the tally is agreed as it happens and the cargo's condition is recorded before it leaves the quay.
Cargo manifest and stowage plan reviewed before arrival, lifting gear and slings confirmed with the stevedores, quay space and storage allocated with the port, and the receiver's clearing and transport arranged so that cargo moves off the quay as it lands.

Independent tally clerks where the receiver wants them, mate's receipts and out-turn reports agreed with the stevedores, and damage noted and photographed at the hook so that responsibility can be assigned. The desk coordinates surveyors appointed by cargo and vessel interests.

Long pipes, heavy plates, machinery and awkward pieces need lifting plans and sometimes port heavy lift equipment. The desk arranges them with the port and the stevedores and confirms the road move from the quay.

This desk is part of Maingate Shipping Limited, the Mombasa ship agency, crewing and brokerage house that has attended vessels at Kenyan ports since 2020 from its office at Express Building, Moi Avenue. Port agency at Mombasa and Lamu is handled by the company's own boarding officers; calls elsewhere in Africa run through the Maingate agency line under one DA format and one reporting style; Kenyan seafarers are recruited and managed from the same office; and the chartering desk fixes the tonnage that brings East Africa its wheat, fertilizer, clinker and fuel.
Principals deal with one desk for the whole voyage, and every service is agreed in writing before it is performed.
