Port Agency for Zimbabwean Importers and Exporters at the Coast

Gateway coordination

Port Agency for Zimbabwean Importers and Exporters at the Coast

For principals in Harare and Bulawayo, the sea starts at Beira or one of the other gateways. Maingate Shipping attends the vessel, clears the corridor paperwork and reports to the inland office as if it were standing on the quay.

CoordinationMaingate Shipping, Mombasa

Maingate Shipping Limited coordinates port agency for Zimbabwean cargo at Beira, Durban, Maputo, Walvis Bay. Inbound, Zimbabwe receives fuel, fertilizer, wheat, machinery and vehicles; outbound it ships tobacco, ferrochrome, chrome ore, lithium concentrates, sugar and granite. Each gateway has its own desk in this cluster; this desk is where a principal in Harare and Bulawayo starts.

The regime: cargo moves under SADC transit arrangements with bonds lodged at the port of entry and cleared at the border. The desk prepares the corridor documents with the receiver's clearing agent before the vessel arrives, so that discharge is not held by paperwork.

What shapes the traffic: tobacco season and mineral export programmes set the rhythm of Zimbabwean shipping, and the desk plans vessel nominations around them.

On every Zimbabwean shipment

  • Cost and time comparison across gateways
  • Proforma DA at the chosen port
  • Boarding officer at the call
  • Bonds lodged before discharge
  • Bagging and truck flow for bulk
  • Corridor tracking to the border
  • Export documents and loading supervision
  • Multi-port splits as one voyage
  • Agencies' reporting standards
  • One account per shipment

Which port, and why

Beira: the Beira Corridor, the shortest route to the sea for most of the country. Durban: the road and rail route through Beitbridge, used for containers and high-value cargo. Maputo: the Limpopo corridor for bulk exports. Walvis Bay: the Trans-Kalahari route for western Zimbabwe.

Corridor choice for Zimbabwe is not fixed: rail performance, border delays and port congestion move the answer, and the desk's job is to know the answer this month.

Bulk cargo being discharged from the hold

Imports, from the ship's rail to the bond

Inbound, Zimbabwe receives fuel, fertilizer, wheat, machinery and vehicles. The vessel is attended at the gateway by Maingate's own staff at Mombasa or by our partner at the other ports under Maingate's instruction, the discharge is matched to the trucks or wagons, and the transit bond is lodged before the first tonne lands.

Bulk fertilizer and fuel programmes are the largest movements, and the desk coordinates bagging, tank space and haulage with the discharge so that the vessel is not stopped by the shore.

Ship agents at work, Mombasa

Zimbabwean exports at the coast

Zimbabwe's exports are tobacco, ferrochrome, chrome ore, lithium concentrates, sugar and granite. They arrive at the coast by rail or truck and load on vessels the desk nominates or attends, with the export documents cleared and the loading supervised.

Producers and marketing boards work with the desk on the shipping programme so that vessels arrive when the cargo does.

Documents and the corridor

The desk reports to the principal at each stage: arrival, discharge, bond, departure from the port, border crossing.
