Husbandry
Mombasa's markets, cold stores and chandlers supply vessels with fresh and frozen provisions, dry stores, deck and engine consumables, medicines and bonded stores at prices that make it a sensible place to top up. Maingate Shipping arranges ship supply as part of the port call or as a standalone service for vessels at the anchorage and off port limits.

The desk quotes the master's requisition from suppliers it works with regularly, coordinates the delivery with the port's timing and checks the goods against the order before they go up the gangway.
Fresh fruit, vegetables and meat from Mombasa's suppliers, frozen and dry goods from the cold stores and wholesalers, deck and engine stores from the chandlers, medicines from licensed pharmacies against the vessel's requisition, and bonded stores through the customs procedure. Quotations are sent with the supplier's name so that the owner can compare.

Fresh water is supplied at berth by hydrant and at the anchorage by barge where available. Garbage, sludge and waste oil are removed by licensed contractors with the port's documentation, and the receipts go in the DA.

Deliveries are timed to the vessel's stay and the port's gate hours. A member of the desk checks the goods against the order at the gangway, and the master signs the delivery note. Short or substandard items are refused and replaced.

This desk is part of Maingate Shipping Limited, the Mombasa ship agency, crewing and brokerage house that has attended vessels at Kenyan ports since 2020 from its office at Express Building, Moi Avenue. Port agency at Mombasa and Lamu is handled by the company's own boarding officers; calls elsewhere in Africa run through the Maingate agency line under one DA format and one reporting style; Kenyan seafarers are recruited and managed from the same office; and the chartering desk fixes the tonnage that brings East Africa its wheat, fertilizer, clinker and fuel.
Principals deal with one desk for the whole voyage, and every service is agreed in writing before it is performed.
