Ship Agency in Nigeria: Lagos, Lekki, Onne, Port Harcourt, Warri, Calabar on One Instruction

Nigeria's ports split between the Lagos complex of Apapa, Tin Can Island and the deep-sea port at Lekki, and the Niger Delta ports at Onne and Port Harcourt that serve the oil industry and the south-east.

Ship agency in Nigeria from Maingate Shipping means one instruction for every Nigerian port, one proforma DA format, one reporting style and one desk that knows the vessel from her last call. The cargoes are petroleum products, wheat, sugar, fertilizer, vehicles and containers inbound; crude oil, urea, cocoa and sesame outbound; the hinterland is wider than the country, since Niger and Chad receive some cargo through Nigerian ports alongside the country's own vast market.

Authorities: the Nigerian Ports Authority operates the ports and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency regulates shipping. Formalities are filed by the desk at each port.

The operational fact the desk tells every principal at nomination: anchorage security, gate congestion and river escorts are planned into every call, and each port keeps its own documentation practice.

The ports of Nigeria

Each port has its own desk with the terminals, the cargo and the services a call needs.

Coordinated for every Nigerian call

  • Every commercial port in Nigeria on one instruction
  • Port choice advice per cargo and receiver
  • Pre-arrival notices at each port
  • Corridor and transit bonds coordinated
  • Crew movements planned across the itinerary
  • Bunkers stemmed at the port that suits the route
  • Owner's protecting agency where charterers appoint
  • Claims and survey attendance coordinated
  • Fixtures for cargoes in and out of the country
  • One account, one reconciliation

Nigeria's ports and who attends them

Nigeria's ports are Lagos, Lekki, Onne, Port Harcourt, Warri, Calabar. Lagos handles containers, wheat, sugar, fertilizer, petroleum products, vehicles and general cargo through the container and bulk terminals at Apapa, the terminals at Tin Can Island, the liquid bulk jetties and the anchorage that vessels use while waiting for berth. Lekki handles containers, petroleum products, fertilizer and project cargo through the deep-draft container terminal, the dry bulk and liquid berths, and the jetties serving the refinery and fertilizer complex nearby.

Calls at each port are attended by our partner agent there under Maingate's instruction, with the Mombasa desk issuing the proforma DA, tracking the call and closing the account.

Transit and corridor cargo

The corridor is the second half of every Nigerian call. Niger and Chad receive some cargo through Nigerian ports alongside the country's own vast market, and the desk coordinates transit documentation and evacuation with the forwarders and clearing agents so that the port is a gate and not a bottleneck.

Split cargoes and multi-port loadings in Nigeria are planned as one voyage with consistent documents.

Who the desk files with in Nigeria

Every Nigerian call touches the same authorities: the Nigerian Ports Authority operates the ports and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency regulates shipping. Filing ahead, in the format each expects, is what keeps a vessel from waiting at anchor for a stamp.

Reports to the principal follow one style at every port: pre-arrival, daily, departure with the statement of facts, then the final DA.

Crew, fuel and stores, port by port

The Nigerian operational note that shapes crew, fuel and stores planning: anchorage security, gate congestion and river escorts are planned into every call, and each port keeps its own documentation practice. Medical cases, cash to master and spares are handled at whichever port the itinerary makes convenient.

Owners keep their own account for these matters with the desk as protecting agent.
