Crew Change at Lagos, Nigeria, Planned Around the Vessel's Schedule

Joining and leaving crew at Lagos, Nigeria, move through Murtala Muhammed International Airport to the gangway or the launch on one instruction to Maingate Shipping, with the file cleared before the flight is bought. Attendance is by our partner agent under Maingate's instruction; the Mombasa desk plans the movement and reports it.

Crew change at Lagos is a routine movement: the airport is Murtala Muhammed International Airport, and the port accepts crew changes at berth and by launch at the anchorage. What decides whether the change goes smoothly is the file: passports, seaman's books, the crew list, the agent's letter of guarantee and the visa position for each nationality, all confirmed before the flight is bought.

Maingate Shipping runs the crew change whether or not we are the cargo agent for the call. Managers who use a charterer's agent for the cargo place the crew movement with us as protecting agent, so that the owner controls the arrangement and the account.

A note on Lagos itself: gate congestion, truck call-up systems and anchorage security shape a Lagos call more than at any other West African port, and the agent's local knowledge is what keeps time in hand. The crew plan takes account of it.

  • Replacement crew from Kenya where the owner asks
  • Reporting with times and costs

Getting to and from Murtala Muhammed International Airport

Movements at Lagos run through Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Joiners are met at the aircraft door where the airport allows it and at arrivals where it does not, and are through immigration and on the road without delay when the file was filed in advance. Leavers go the other way with their sign-off papers in hand.

Flight bookings track the vessel, not the other way round: options are held and changed as the ETA firms up, and the owner is told the cost of each change.

Immigration and the file

Immigration at Lagos expects the crew list showing joiners and leavers, passports with adequate validity, seaman's books or seafarer identity documents, and the agent's letter of guarantee. Nationalities that need a visa are pre-notified or obtain it in advance where the rules require; the desk confirms the current position for each crew list rather than relying on a matrix that may be out of date.

Shore passes for crew going ashore during the call and gate passes for the agent's vehicle are issued through the port.

From the airport to the gangway

The last mile at Lagos is the gangway or the launch. Alongside, the boarding officer walks the crew through the gate. At anchor, the launch goes out in daylight with the joiners and comes back with the leavers, and the desk confirms the ladder, the lee side and the timing with the master before it sails.

Off-port-limits crew changes for vessels in transit are done outside the port, with the vessel slowing to take the launch alongside and resuming passage within a couple of hours. Hotels near the port are used when flights land after the last launch.

When a seafarer is sick or injured

A seafarer landed sick at Lagos is taken to hospital by the desk's representative, admitted against the owner's or the club's guarantee, and reported on daily until discharged or repatriated with a fit-to-fly certificate and, where required, a medical escort. The replacement is arranged from the Kenyan pool while the case runs.

Times, names and costs go to the owner promptly; receipts follow with the account.

Who changes crew at Lagos

Who changes crew at Lagos: container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, car carriers and general cargo ships, in the trades of containers, wheat, sugar, fertilizer, petroleum products, vehicles and general cargo. Their rotations differ, so the desk asks the manager for the rotation calendar and works from it, rather than treating every movement as a surprise.

Berth or anchorage decides the last mile; Lagos's working areas are the container and bulk terminals at Apapa, the terminals at Tin Can Island, the liquid bulk jetties and the anchorage that vessels use while waiting for berth.

Yes, by licensed launch in daylight and acceptable weather.

Which airport is used for Lagos?

Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Do you arrange replacement crew?

Yes. Kenyan officers and ratings are placed through our crewing desk in Mombasa with verified documents, and delivered to the vessel at the port of joining.
